The Night Review
Lie down in bed, ready for sleep. This practice comes from the ancient tradition of the evening review — practiced by Pythagoreans, Stoics, and the Ignatian Examen. It is a way to process the day with honesty and compassion, so you can release it fully and sleep with a clear mind. Close your eyes.

Three settling breaths. With each exhale, let one layer of the day fall away.
... breathe deeply ...
... breathe deeply ...
... breathe deeply ...
Begin by reviewing the day in reverse. Start with this moment — lying here, in bed, choosing to reflect. Now move backward. What happened in the last hour? What were you doing? Simply observe, as if watching a film of your own day.

Continue backward through the evening. Dinner. The late afternoon. Any conversations, tasks, moments of rest. Don't judge anything. Just watch.

Move through the afternoon. What happened? What did you do, say, think, feel? Watch it unfold in reverse, like a river flowing backward toward its source.
... take a longer pause here ...
Through the middle of the day. Lunch. The late morning. Continue watching your day as an impartial observer — curious, kind, nonjudgmental.

The early morning. Waking up. Your first moments of consciousness. How did the day begin? Arrive back at the start.
... take a moment to pause ...
Now that you've reviewed the full day, let three moments rise to the surface. First: a moment of gratitude. Something that went well, something you enjoyed, someone who was kind. Let this moment come clearly into focus. Feel the gratitude. Let it warm your chest. Silently say "thank you" to this moment.
... take a longer pause here ...
Second: a moment of growth. Something you learned, a challenge you faced, a mistake that taught you something. This doesn't need to be pleasant — growth often isn't. But look at it with compassion. You are becoming who you are through these moments. Honor the difficulty as a teacher.
... take a longer pause here ...
Third: a moment you would do differently. Not to punish yourself, but to learn. If you spoke harshly, imagine speaking gently. If you avoided something, imagine facing it. Don't dwell in guilt — simply update the pattern. Your brain cannot distinguish vividly imagined behavior from real behavior. By rehearsing the better choice, you make it more likely tomorrow.
... take a longer pause here ...
Now release the day. Imagine gathering all the events, emotions, conversations, and tasks into a bundle. Hold the bundle in your hands. Feel its weight — the full weight of one human day.
... take a moment to pause ...
And set it down. Place it beside the bed. It is complete. It is done. There is nothing more to do with today. It belongs to the past now. Tomorrow will bring its own work, its own gifts, its own challenges. But tonight, you rest.
... take a longer pause here ...
Now clear your mind. Imagine your thoughts as words written on a chalkboard. Take a soft eraser and gently wipe the board clean. If a thought reappears, erase it again — calmly, without frustration. The board doesn't need to stay clean forever. Just for tonight.
... take a longer pause here ...
Feel the relief of an empty mind. There is nothing to figure out. Nothing to plan. Nothing to remember. You have reviewed your day with honesty, extracted its lessons with kindness, and released it with grace. Your work is done.
... take a moment to pause ...
If it resonates, set a gentle intention for tomorrow. Just one word or phrase. Perhaps "patience." Perhaps "courage." Perhaps "presence." Plant it like a seed in the quiet soil of your resting mind. It will germinate while you sleep.
... take a longer pause here ...
Now let everything go. Let the practice dissolve. Let your body be heavy, your mind be empty, your heart be at peace. Sleep is the great healer, and it is waiting for you with open arms.
... take a longer pause here ...
Rest now. You have lived this day fully. You have reflected on it honestly. You have released it completely. There is nothing more to do. Only sleep. Deep, cleansing, renewing sleep.
... take a longer pause here ...
Goodnight. Rest well. Tomorrow, begin again.
